Benefits

Helps prevent organ rejection in patients who have undergone kidney, liver, or heart transplant. Used to treat autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and inflammatory bowel disease. Works by suppressing the immune system, reducing the risk of it attacking transplanted organs. Allows other anti-rejection medications (like corticosteroids) to be used at lower doses, minimizing side effects.

Dosage

Usual dose: 1–3 mg/kg/day, depending on condition and body weight. Take once or twice daily after meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. Dose and duration are determined by your transplant specialist.

Side Effects

Common: Nausea, vomiting, mild fatigue, or temporary hair loss. Less Common: Skin rash, sore throat, or mouth ulcers. Serious (rare): Unexplained bruising, fever, yellowing of skin/eyes (indicates liver or blood issues).

⚠️ Precaution

Avoid live vaccines during treatment (e.g., MMR, polio, yellow fever). Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor white blood cell count and liver function. Avoid direct sunlight or UV exposure; wear sunscreen. Consult your doctor immediately if you develop infection symptoms like fever or persistent cough.
