Benefits
Used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs such as kidney, heart, or liver. Provides targeted immunosuppression, helping the body accept the transplanted organ. Sometimes used to treat severe eczema or rheumatoid arthritis when other treatments fail. More potent and effective than older immunosuppressants like cyclosporine.
Typical starting dose: 0.075–0.2 mg/kg/day in two divided doses. Take every 12 hours (morning and evening) on an empty stomach or 2 hours after food. Avoid grapefruit juice, as it increases drug levels in the blood. Dosing is adjusted based on blood tacrolimus levels and patient response.
Common: Tremors, headache, diarrhea, or increased blood sugar. Moderate: Insomnia, tingling sensation, or mild hypertension. Serious (rare): Kidney problems, confusion, or vision changes — consult your doctor immediately.
Regularly monitor kidney function and blood levels. Avoid live vaccines during treatment. Maintain good hygiene — the immune system will be suppressed. Report signs of infection (fever, sore throat, or chills) immediately. Avoid excessive sunlight; Tacrolimus may make skin more sensitive.
